To ensure proper operating conditions the entire rail network is constantly maintained. Work focuses on superstructures (rails, sleepers, switches, ballast), substructures, level crossings, bridges, traffic control and safety equipment, electrification and power current equipment, and land areas. Measures include inspections, regular maintenance, repairs and in winter snow clearing. The operation of the rail network includes the renting of communications links, the remote control of electrified lines and the consumption of electricity for track equipment (switch heating, yard lighting and other track technology).

To maintain the rail network, repairs are carried out on the basis of inspections and track condition monitoring. Repair work includes the switching of worn sleepers, rails and components in switches, safety equipment and other systems.
